your bear friend ran into some trouble. looks like it's not the only thing on this ship with big teeth. gotta say, you handled it suddenly being in your face with much more style, though.
if you were near the oxygen garden yesterday, you might have heard it roar. if you were in the dark, well. guess that's not the only place things are lurking.
[ She doesn't expect him to reply, but she's kind of bored, curled up in bed nursing a lot of bruises -- and he seemed to like her better as a bear. Besides, it just goes to show that the light isn't all that safe, either. ]
( T E X T | dated to the day erik and jaye find riddick )
[ She skips the formalities, for once. She's too sick and typing is too difficult and even as sick as she is Alayne knows that he will not like it. An answer isn't expected and perhaps it is unwise to forewarn him, but if he flees from help in this then it is not she who is the fool in this matter. ]
A lone wolf dies. The pack survives.
You found Lady once, now she looks for you. Do not flee from the sound of her. She will help you.
going to guess you're awake now. do me a favor and don't pass out in the middle of fucking nowhere next time, you were a pain in the ass to carry back.
also don't go wandering off on your own when you're sick, idiot.

[ She doesn't want him wandering off into the dark right now. Carolyn doesn't think he would willingly go looking for those things, but with how much he likes to tell her that she doesn't know him... she feels better asking. ]
[It's not meant as a reassurance so much as a simple fact. He doesn't go looking for fights, and the video on the network hadn't shown anything worth investigating, as far as he was concerned.]
[so this is odd, isn't it. tate is actively looking for Riddick. he doesn't call out to him, but he keeps turning up in all the places he knows Riddick normally haunts.
the shuttle bay. the halls. he passes his room. goes back to the shuttle bay. he knows he won't find him, but he figures that maybe, eventually, Riddick will get tired of being tailed.]
[Tate tailing him is not a new thing, even if the kid thinks Riddick doesn't know it's happening. Doesn't know how he hangs around the shuttle bay following Carolyn, either. But his tricks don't work on Riddick, not all the way. Eventually, in the shuttle bay, hours after everyone else has left or fallen asleep on the mattresses there, only Carolyn working far down the other end, Riddick breaks the silence.]
Nothing better to do, kid?
[He's crouched in the shadow of an empty bay above Tate, watching, eyes uncovered, reflecting slivers of light.]
[ hayley knows that she has talked to this guy all of- once. and while it isn't trust, exactly, it's an educated guess. hayley's fingers drum over her mouth for a few minutes before she hits send. ]
say you have a feeling someone's got it out for you. you can't prove it, but you aren't stupid enough to ignore your instincts.
[Someone's always got it out for Riddick. It's how he lives, and knowing it and dealing with it is why he lives, and isn't locked up somewhere or dead already. He's never gone looking for a fight, but when they come to him, he doesn't back down.]
[ robb doesn't begin speaking immediately, pausing like he's considering what to say. he's grown better at that, at carefully chosing his words. ]
I need your opinion on a matter. I know you claim no part of my affairs, nor offer me your counsel, but I find this to be something I cannot lay the feet of my brothers, nor of my banners. So if you'd hear me, I would be appreciative of such.
[It's not a message Riddick wants to get. Hasn't had much to do with Robb or the rest of the (dwindling) collection of people that had surrounded Alayne. Robb is the last that holds all the words Alayne liked to use on him, the insistence of some kind of debt or connection, and that has made Riddick avoid him. Makes him want to ignore this, too. But something has him picking up the comms, hitting the command to reply.]
[This is coming sooner than he was expecting. And from a source he wasn't expecting. But maybe this way there's the chance he can cut it off at the pass.]
[There was a time when Riddick didn't even need to guess - Carolyn would side with Johns. But after what happened on that planet, everything since, maybe it means he needs to ask, now. But maybe having to ask is more telling than he'd really like. It means the answer is important.]
[ God, but she sounds tired -- tired and frantic, like an animal who's been trying to escape a trap for days but just can't get free. ]
Fuck. I saw- [ everything, she saw everything, saw and smelt the way he does; she felt it, like she was Richard B. Riddick, escaped convict and murderer. ]
[Maybe he should have expected this. Shuttle goes missing, time to look to the escaped convict hanging around in the rafters. When he replies he sounds amused, a light, almost mocking tone that's more reminiscent of their first conversation on Hades than anything since.]
[ An audio transmission suddenly starts in the middle of someone sputtering urgently. It's ratty at best, plagued by the ebb and flow of constant static that seems hellbent on cutting in at the worst times. ]
—ing this? This is —imm of Team N—bi. If anyone copies, the s—nged. It's— I don't even—It sh—n't be —ng possible.
[ It cuts out with a sharp crackle before easing back in, only to pick up a sudden clank of metal colliding with a hard surface and the decidedly obvious curse that goes along with it. ]
—ou doing? I said st—ck! You h— no clue w—t you st—
[ The static stopped for just a moment of tense silence before a quick gasp and a wet growl rebounded from somewhere. Whoever they are, their shoes scrape across the ground in some attempt to run as something whirring and snarling hits the transmission with an ear-piercing charge.
There's shouting but nothing intelligible until the ratcheting teeth of something steely come to life and blankets every other noise, tearing at something hard, but not indestructible. It splits and fissures, almost sounding like the split of gristle and bone, but it's hard to tell if it's the transmission or the static making those sounds. ]
Anyone —y?! You —ave to come help! We're— We—
[ The whirring ceases, but not the screams of something angry, or maybe it's just the slide of metal squealing against metal to overwhelm the audio and effectively end it. ]
[she's watching him. as careful as she may've been when finding a position to sit (on the wing of one of the shuttles across the bay), she isn't delusional enough to believe that he doesn't know. that he can't tell when someone's watching. but it isn't him she's staying hidden from. isn't him that she cares about being interrupted by. the rest of the people in the shuttlebay are strangers, so she doesn't want their attention to fall on her, even in passing.
it's late now; hours since she took up her position. since he began working on the shuttle. hours, and now she's had enough. she's ready to walk away and leave him to it.
she just-- she isn't sure that's what she really wants.
pulling her network device out her pocket, she types out a message to one of only two numbers she's bothered making a note of. short, and without an real request for his attention. whether he sees through it or not, neither would surprise her.]
[Riddick knows she's there as soon as she enters the bay. It's a toss up on her being there to watch Carolyn or him, but might be she's managing both - he's capable of it, just as aware of her eyes on him as he is of Carolyn working with the rest of her crew down the other end of the bay. It's never been interesting, but Riddick knew how to let time pass in observation, the important part still having Carolyn in his sights.
He doesn't think Kyra has the same long-built patience - she's reactive, volatile. It's no surprise when his comms pings, but he takes his time setting the wrench down, wiping his hands on a rag before he picks it up. His back is to her, but his voice carries over the empty space between them clear enough.]
Think I picked up tools soon as I landed here?
[He'd marked the shuttlebay, followed the crew's progress in working on the shuttles, but kept himself out in the dark until Carolyn arrived. Hadn't starting working til months after that, his projects far away from the rest of the bay, the rest of the crew knowing not to bother him. Carolyn bothering him whenever she wanted.]
[ She doesn't know why she bothers with the comm when half the time he's tucked away in the shadows, but it could be the one time he isn't that she decides to forgo it. ]
I can get into different information on the consoles, now; found out when I leaned on one at the right angle on accident. The pirates landed in a bay we didn't know anything about.
[He knows about her changed nanites. Had noticed nearly immediately, when she'd walked into the shuttle bay with red on her arm instead of black. CFO, head of the pack all official like now, but he doesn't know why or how, and the nanites rank high on his priorities regarding the ship.
This isn't a message he's going to ignore.]
Found something worth looking at?
[In the consoles, he means. Not corrupted beyond recognition, like he'd expect.]
